    • Philip Lock (1791-1835) was the 6th child of John and Salome Lock, Frederick Co. MD, a German immigrant family. Philip was probably the second generation post immigration. he was born and raised in Woodsboro and Frederick Co. He was a skilled shoemaker and farmer who migrated to Preble Co. Ohio with his parents and siblings about 1809-1816.

Philip Lock, m. Elizabeth Wolf, dau. of Johan Jacob Wolf, by license issued 10 Nov. 1814, Frederick Co., MD. Elizabeth was raised in the Brethern Church and Philip in the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Philip died at the age of 44. The cause of death is not known. His death was documented through Preble Co. records including:

Preble County Index to Guardianships, 1833-1850
Lock, Jacob, Abram, Isaac, Christina, Sally, Elizabeth, Solomon & Philip was in Preble Co. for the 1820 Census--1830 Census and died before the 1840 Census.

Preble County Common Pleas Court Records 1808-1840. In this book was found references to Philip Lock. One in particular from January 9, 1836 refers to Elizabeth Lock, widow of Philip. Another record refers to their children (all named with ages included) as choosing Elizabeth as their guardian.

Philip died shortly after Rosannah was born. Solomon was only 3 years old.Almost all of the family was in Ohio at that time. His widow, Elizabeth Wolf Lock, shows up in the 1850 Census in Preble Co. Ohio in the home of her oldest on and his wife, Jacob W. Lock. In another document, Elizabeth sold land to the three oldest boys, Jacob, Abraham, and Solomon. Jacob's later moved this entire family later went to LaSalle co Ill. and many members of the Preble Co. community are found their with them.

The LaSalle County Biographical and Genealogical Record (not sure of pub date) says that

"Phillip Lock was by trade a shoemaker, but was for a number of years engaged in farming. He was one of the pioneers of Preble County, Ohio, where he cleared and improved a farm, and where he died, at the age of fifty years. His widow survived him a number of years and came west with her youngest son to LaSalle County, Illinois, where she died at the age of seventy-two years. Both Phillip Lock and his wife were members of the Lutheran church." The same article said that Elizabeth's father was named John Wolf. Another source says her father was named Jacob. According to the LaSalle County 1870 census she was 75 at the time and living on a farm in Vermillion Township with a Mary E. Lock, aged 21 (this would have been the Mary E. living in Preble age 2 in 1850 Census."

The cause of Philip's death is unknown but it should be noted that the state of Ohio experienced a Cholera Epidemics and a severe epidemic of influenza around the time Philip died.
Beginning in the early 1830s, cholera epidemics killed thousands of United States citizens, including many Ohioans.

Philip's family has been challenging to trace. I have been unable to locate Rosanna in any records past adulthood, except for one marriage record to John Swisher in Ohio.
