    • Capt. John Lock Family History's BlurbsAbout me:
Born in Frederick Co. Maryland July 4, 1755. The Lock family came in to the US in the Great Palatinate German Immigration around 1732-1748. He Enlisted in the Continental Army July 4, 1776 with the Frederick Co. Flying Camp. Field Commissioned to Captain. --He was NOT English, But German and settled in German communities, married a German woman and went to German churches. --He was NOT a Stowaway or on a plantation in VA --He was NOT appointed Aid de Camp to General Washington --He was NOT in the War of 1812. Ohio land was opened to veterans from that war and it does appear that the family moved to Ohio about between 1815- 1816 (son George stayed in Maryland). --John Ott, having served just north of Preble Co. OH in Ft. Recovery, may have scouted the land ahead of time and filed claim on it along with Lock's sons, early in the settlement of OHIO as Preble was on the far Western border and not settled as early as other eastern parts of the state. They apparently did get ther early enough to get adjoining sections of land, near water, started building bridges and road crews, railroad tie factories and water ways, rock quaries and many of the essential community building resources early in the settlement of Preble Co. Many of their Maryland friends and relatives joined them in OH). --John Ott (Captain Lock's son-in-law) was a member of General Wayne's army which was sent to western Ohio to subdue the Indians. After they declared the peace near Fort Recovery, Darke County, Ohio. John Ott was present when the Treaty of Greenville was signed. --Captain Commision information: Maryland Hall of Records, Anapolis MD. John Lock 29th Regiment, 1794, Frederick Co. MD." Found by Dahl Drenning, Dec. 1997 in Anapolis MD. Some Facts About John Lock: Rocky Hill church records list him as Johannes Lock, one of the founders of the Church. --Owned a stone quarry in Ohio.Probably not a blacksmith or locksmith. -- St. Peter's Evan Lutheran Reform Church: Confirmations: 13 Sep 1778, p. 212.12. LACK Johan, 20 years (his birthdate might actually have been 1758) --The Lock View Farm is still owned by Locke descendant. --John and other Frederick Co MD families are listed as founders of the St.John's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Lewisburg OH, next to Roselawn Cemetary, the Spring of 1808. On June 27, 1815, two deeds were given for land that is now part of Roselawn cemetery. One was by Adam Brown and the other by Frederick Black (Friedrich Schwartz), donating the propertry upon which to build a church. They read thus: "To John Lock, Sr., and Peter Ozias, appointed by the German Lutheran and German Calvinist Society, known by the name of Frederick's Meeting House Congregation." Witnesses to the transaction were John Lock and Joseph Black." --Membership of this first church included Black, Brown, Lock, Ozias, Kesler, Horn, Espich, Diehl, Ott, Oldfather, Diefenbach, Kiser, Siler, Lyons. --First Tax Records: Ohio Records, Taxes Lock, John tx |1816 |Tax Preble John Lock is listed in the verified First Families of Ohio through the Ohio Genealogy Society. --He is buried at Roselawn Cemetary, Lewisburg, Ohio Row 16, Grave 23, Section 1
